NEW YORK, NY, October 29, 2007: Sir Dennis Byron, President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) held a special meeting with CARICOM ambassadors today to brief them on the work of the ICTR and particular areas of interest to Caribbean states. Sir Dennis, who hails from St. Kitts-Nevis, was the Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court before accepting a position at the ICTR. Sir Dennis' briefing included information on the number of cases heard by the ICTR, the trials in progress, and their timeline for completion. He also discussed issues related to the Tribunal's mandate, its remaining term, and the problem of fugitives who remain at large. Sir Dennis also told the CARICOM ambassadors about opportunities for young lawyers and court reporters within the ICTR, and he encouraged applicants from the region. |
